Wipefs calls the BLKRRPART ioctl when it has erased a partition-table signature to inform the kernel about the change. Note that some filesystems and some partition tables store more magic strings on the device. The wipefs command lists only the first offset where a magic string has been detected. The device is not scanned for additional magic. # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2 bs=512 count=1 1+0 records in 1+0 records out 512 bytes copied, 0.0116875 s, 43.8 kB/s. You can wipe a disk is done by writing new data over every single bit. Wipefs can list or erase file system, RAID or partition-table signatures (magic strings) from the specified device to make the signatures invisible for libblkid(3). It does not erase the file systems themselves nor any other data from the device. See wipefs(8) for more information. Wipefs Version: 2.34-1 Description: wipefs can erase filesystem, raid or partition table signatures (magic strings) from the specified device to make the signature invisible for libblkid. Installed size: 11kB Dependencies: libc, libssp, libblkid1, libsmartcols1 Categories: utilities-disc Repositories: base Architectures.
DESCRIPTION
wipefs can erase filesystem, raid or partition-table signatures (magic strings) from the specified device
to make the signatures invisible for libblkid. wipefs does not erase the filesystem itself nor any other data from the device.
When used without any options, wipefs lists all visible filesystems and the offsets of their basic signatures. The default output is subject to change. So whenever possible, you should avoid using default outputs in your scripts. Always explicitly define expected columns by using −−output
columns-list
in environments where a stable output is required.
wipefs calls the BLKRRPART ioctl when it has erased a partition-table signature to inform the kernel about the change. The ioctl is called as the last step and when all specified signatures from all specified devices are already erased.
Note that some filesystems and some partition tables store more magic strings on the device (e.g. FAT, ZFS, GPT). The wipefs command (since v2.31) lists all the offset where a magic strings have been detected.
When option −a
is used, all magic strings that are visible for libblkid are erased. In this case the wipefs scans the device again after each modification (erase) until no magic string is found.
Note that by default wipefs Download sony motherboards driver. does not erase nested partition tables on non-whole disk devices. For this the option −−force
is required.

Description
Erases the free space on hard disks (including Solid State/SSD), USB flash drives etc.
The time it takes to wipe a volume depends on the size of the volume, the speed of your Mac (and amount of RAM), and how many passes you specify. Obviously, 8 passes will take approximately eight times longer than 1 pass.
