EA recently released a new set of games on STEAM this past week, including Mass Effect, Battlefield, and the Star Wars Battlefront series. It has now come to our notice that a lot of Mass Effect 3 players are currently facing performance issues with the STEAM version of this game, as evident from this forum thread.
EA’s “Origin in-game overlay” seems to be the culprit here. The Steam version of Mass Effect 3 game has reportedly been suffering from performance issues, and the exact root cause has been narrowed down by gamers to the Origin overlay which actually remains permanently enabled in the background. These issues are yet to be addressed though.
Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda have both been brought to Steam by EA in a surprise move. Originally, both games were exclusive to Origin, EA's PC gaming distribution platform.
I wanted to import my Mass Effect 1 character that I invested 50 hours on, into Mass Effect 2. However, I bought Mass Effect 1 on Steam and when I go to import my character there isn't anything there. Is there some way to transfer the save file to Origin so that I can import my level 50 Shepard? Mass Effect 3 is out now on Steam, completing Commander Shepard's journey on Valve's PC storefront. The final piece of the Mass Effect trilogy - the first two have been there for years - arrived. The Mass Effect™ Legendary Edition includes single-player base content and over 40 DLC from the highly acclaimed Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 games, including promo weapons, armors, and packs – remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. Reflect on Your Choices Your choices seamlessly travel from one game to the next. Return to the Mass Effect universe. Lead the first humans in Andromeda on a desperate search for our new home. In this new chapter of Mass Effect, meet and recruit all-new, interesting characters caught up in an epic space saga filled with mystery and galactic conflict. Fight for survival.
Many PC gamers are suffering from significant gameplay performance issues. And the worst part is that Steam users cannot disable this feature due to the background ‘intrusive’ nature of EA’s Origin overlay. Mass Effect 3 should run easily on most of the modern PC systems, but gamers are unable to enjoy a smooth gaming experience due to framerate spikes, FPS drops and stuttering/lag.
Surprisingly, even if you disable the Origin overlay from the Origin settings, Mass Effect 3 will automatically enable the Origin overlay in the background on Steam, resulting in poor overall performance.
Before some gamers have noted that Mass Effect 3 had performance issues even on the Origin overlay. But when they disabled the overlay all the stutters and lag disappeared. However, this same solution does not seem to work on the STEAM version, since the steam client forces and enables the Origin overlay regardless.
EA told some of the Steam users that this is a Steam issue, but when the exact same problem already existed before on the Origin overlay, we find it hard to believe how can the STEAM client be at fault here.
As of now, Mass Effect 3’s Steam version has mixed reviews.
Stay tuned for an update.

Hello, my name is NICK Richardson. I'm an avid PC and tech fan since the good old days of RIVA TNT2, and 3DFX interactive 'Voodoo' gaming cards. I love playing mostly First-person shooters, and I'm a die-hard fan of this FPS genre, since the good 'old Doom and Wolfenstein days. MUSIC has always been my passion/roots, but I started gaming 'casually' when I was young on Nvidia's GeForce3 series of cards. I'm by no means an avid or a hardcore gamer though, but I just love stuff related to the PC, Games, and technology in general. I've been involved with many indie Metal bands worldwide, and have helped them promote their albums in record labels. I'm a very broad-minded down to earth guy. According to Game Debate, the culprit of this performance knock stems from the Origin in-game overlay that is applied to EA games. Just after launch a thread appeared on the Electronic Arts official forums which also points to the overlay as the issue. Responses explain that users should attempt to disable the overlay which had been known to affect performance. The problem with Mass Effect 3's Steam releases is that the overlay is continuously enabled.
Some users in the thread posted support conversations which point to the problem as being a technical issue with Steam. Taking a peak at the Steam user reviews, which currently sits at a 'Mixed' rating, many players are suffering from the aforementioned poor performance. The top five up-voted reviews all acknowledge a widespread problem and urge others to hold off on a purchase until a fix is released.
Mass Effect 3 released last week as part of EA's previous rollout of games on the Steam client. Yesterday had a whole new slew of games that were previously locked to EA's Origin client on PC. The recent batch of releases include Titanfall 2, Dead Space 3, A Way Out, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and Need for Speed: Payback. The big title to come with these releases is the Sims 4 which has 10 million active users.
Fans are hoping that Mass Effect 3's performance issues are fixed quickly. Some are ready to replay the trilogy on PC again after the rumored Mass Effect Trilogy remaster was not at EA Play.
Mass Effect 3 is now available on PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
